Double-Strangeness Studies at FLAIR

چکیده
Studies of hadronic systems involving double strangeness (S = -2) are practically limited to searches for the Hparticle, a system of B = 2, S = -2, first proposed by Jaffe [1] which up to now was not observed. Apart from this exotic object the measurement of the interaction in hadronic systems with double strangeness is of general QCD interest and will result in a better understanding of the strong interaction. The proposed experiment [2] for the observation of strangeness -2 baryonic states is based on the production of Ξ-baryons in the special condition of recoil-free kinematics. A direct production of Ξ hyperons with zero momentum in a nuclear environment is a very efficient way to produce strongly interacting S = -2 baryonic systems. To achieve such recoil-free kinematics for the Ξ production a K* 'beam' would be particularly suitable where the K* momentum should be about 160 MeV/c for mK*= 982 MeV/c. The K* momenta resulting from the antiproton annihilation via: p p →K *K* are about 290 MeV/c at the nominal K* mass. Taking into account the K* mass width of about 50 MeV/c the produced K* momenta very well match the required condition for recoil-free kinematics.

Fragmentation and strangeness at PANDA
Hypernuclear physics offers the unique possibility to study the behaviour of the hyperon-nucleon (Y N ) and the hyperon-hyperon (Y Y ) interaction inside excited hadronic matter [1] at terrestrial laboratories, such as the FAIR facility at GSI, Darmstadt. Such investigations are important for a better understanding of the strangeness sector of the equation of state, a topic of current research,...
متن کاملFLAIR2: A Combination of FLAIR and T2 for Improved MS Lesion Detection.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE FLAIR and double inversion recovery are important MR imaging scans for MS. The suppression of signal from CSF in FLAIR and the additional suppression of WM signal in double inversion recovery improve contrast between lesions, WM and GM, albeit at a reduced SNR. However, whether the acquisition of double inversion recovery is necessary is still debated. Here, we present an...
متن کاملEffect of Echo Time on the Maximum Relationship between Contrast Agent Concentration and Signal Intensity Using FLAIR Sequence
Introduction Contrast-enhanced fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) is one of the MRI sequences that can be used for detection and evaluation of pathological changes in the brain. In this work, we have studied the effect of different echo times (TE) on the maximum relationship between signal intensity and concentration of the contrast agent using the FLAIR sequence. Materials and Methods...
متن کاملDouble-Λ Hypernuclei via the Ξ− Hyperon Capture at Rest Reaction in a Hybrid Emulsion
We have obtained nearly one thousand events of the Ξ− hyperon captured at rest in nuclear emulsion. Among them, production and decay of double-Λ hypernuclei was successfully found and analyzed for five events which correspond to five nuclear species with double strangeness. Preliminary results are discussed for the binding energy and interaction energy of two Λ hyperons. By comparison with olde...
متن کاملDouble inversion recovery brain imaging at 3T: diagnostic value in the detection of multiple sclerosis lesions.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To prospectively determine the sensitivity in the detection of multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions by using double inversion recovery (DIR), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), and T2-weighted turbo spin-echo (T2 TSE) MR imaging at 3T. METHODS Seventeen patients presenting with a clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) suggestive of MS, 9 patients with definite MS, and ...
